Lilting (2016 Feature Film)

Marisol Gómez Mouakad | Puerto Rico, Mexico | 2016 | color | DCP | 90 min | Spanish, English | e.s.

After Kai’s sudden death, his British boyfriend Richard tries to get to know Junn, Kai’s Asian mother. She however speaks no English and doesn’t know her son was gay. Can an interpreter offer a solution to Richard and Junn or is more needed?

British Richard was blissfully happy with his boyfriend Kai, until the latter died suddenly. Junn, Kai’s Asian mother mourns equally. However she doesn’t know her son was gay and shared his life with Richard. The latter tries to look after her the way Kai would have wanted. But how do you do that if you don’t speak each other’s language and there’s always an elephant in the room? The director was inspired by his own life. In the 1980s he arrived in the UK from Cambodia with his parents as a political refugee. The new language and culture were difficult and the family encountered plenty of obstacles. Hong Khaou wrote this reserved drama with emotionally charged dream sequences by asking the burning question: how do you deal with a still alien environment if your only lifeline disappears and communication breaks down on multiple levels?
