The beauty industry is big business in Venezuela and the country is a major supplier of beauty queens: the world’s most beautiful woman, Miss Universe, originated from the country no less than seven times. In late 2015, the Venezuelan runner-up also made the news after the presenter made an embarrassing mistake during the contest’s final. 3 Bellezas provides a painful, hilarious yet critical look at the insanity surrounding beauty pageants, which start at an early age for young girls. Perla, a single mother of three, is obsessed by these pageants. One of her daughters must become a beauty queen, whatever the cost, and training to accomplish that starts young. Walking lessons, compulsory weighing sessions, fingers-down-your-throat tips and a locked fridge are all part of the goal to win. The complete focus on glitter and glamour means son Salvador is entirely forgotten. Which daughter, Estefania or Carolina, has the best chance of winning? As the big day of the Miss República contest approaches, the competition between the two reaches dangerous new heights.

Carlos CARIDAD-MONTERO (1967, Venezuela) is a director and scriptwriter for film, TV and radio. He attended the Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo and the Cuban film school Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de Los Baños. During the 1990s he founded his production company Nomenclatura Films, for which he directed a number of short films that ended up being screened at international festivals including Cannes. 3 Bellezas (2014) is his first feature film.
