Dar Noir (2016 Feature Film) Nominee

Hamadi Mwapachu | Tanzania | 2015 | 115 min | Creole | e.s.

The tough streets of Dar es Salaam aren’t getting any safer with the detective responsible more concerned with his own drug use and corruption than anything else. Until, that is, he meets a special prostitute and decides to make amends. But does he still have time to turn the tide of evil?

Drugs crime, human trafficking and prostitution are rampant in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The local drug baron can do as he pleases because the detective in charge of keeping the streets safe is – as a heroin addict – up to his neck in it. The cop shoots away the pain from his past and his recent divorce until he’s once again found passed out in his crummy Mercedes. This corrupt cop doesn’t even shy away from rip deals. At rock bottom, he meets a prostitute who gradually provides a different take on the future. With her help and love, he decides to make radical changes. This streetwise feature film debut has dark, but also black comedy elements. The characters are played by both professionals and amateurs. An eclectic mix of dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass soundtracks the plot twists in this psychological crime drama.
