Determined to better his ways, 30-year old Samuel leaves prison after eight years. However, the talented boxer soon learns that his surroundings are much less forgiving than he had hoped and couldn’t care less about his plans for a new future. His former coach has a new generation of pupils and Samuel can only box as a sparring partner (chata) at the criminal Papillon’s underground boxing ring.
Director Gustavo Ramos Perales took the scintillating boxing scene of Puerto Rico as the point of departure for his debut drama about second chances and perseverance. The film is one of five nominees for the Yellow Robin Award. Convincing acting and action-packed fight scenes reveal that boxing seems to promise a better life for many Puerto Ricans, but even with great ambition and talent, there’s a constant pull to abandon the straight and narrow. Sometimes, boxing literally and metaphorically destroys more than you can handle.
