Dreamy second film by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher about a family of beekeepers in the remote Tuscany countryside, living by their own rules. But the outside world can’t be kept at arm’s length forever. Young Gelsomina is almost an adult, and realises her father is not the man she thought he was.

In recent years, director Alice Rohrwacher has proven to be one of the greatest talents in Italy. She wrote this dreamy story about a family living on a remote farm and keeping bees based on her experiences as a young German-Italian. Wolfgang, the crude father (Sam Louwyck), hopes that his eldest daughter Gelsomina will one day carry on the beekeeping business in the same small-scale way.

Their cheerful, chaotic life is put under pressure when the family is asked to take part in a competition to win a role in a TV commercial. Wolfgang doesn’t like the attention, but for the rest of the family this is a comical diversion from their dull country life. For the first time, young Gelsomina finds out that her desires are different from her father’s.

A dreamy, delicate and loving portrait of a family trying to live in its own way, in spite of encroachment from the outside world.

Alice ROHRWACHER (1980, Italië) studeerde literatuur en filosofie aan de universiteit van Turijn en specialiseerde zich in het schrijven van scenario’s. Haar speelfilmdebuut Corpo celeste (2011) was de opening van de Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes. Rohrwachers tweede speelfilm Le meraviglie (2014), waarin ze haar zus Alba Rohrwacher regisseert, won de Grand Prix van het Cannes filmfestival in 2014.
