Café com Canela (2018 Feature Film)

Violeta lives in a Brazilian Bahia village full of striking characters. Everyone struggles with daily life, scarred by loss and mourning, yet all find comfort in the sense of community and spirituality. Only Margarida suffers in solitude and silence. A transforming film about transformation.

Ary ROSA | Glenda NICÁCIO | Brazil | 2017 | color | DCP | 102′ | Portuguese | e.s.

Violeta lives in a tight-knit community in Bahia, Brazil. She is far from the only one struggling with grief and loss: there is also a grandmother entirely dependent on care, a woman desperately searching for love and a young doctor who – after 20 years – is left by his great love, a much older man. Everyone thought they lived together as father and son until the old man dies. The loss is complete and the truth comes out. Then Violeta meets the older Margarida who is grieving alone and in silence in a nearby village. Lovingly Violeta helps her out of her isolation with practical rituals: scrubbing, tidying and making coffee with cinnamon.

Coffee with Cinnamon is the prize-winning debut of Rosa and Nicácio. In a film that exudes enthusiasm and daring, the makers intimately depict sensitive subjects such as grief, homophobia, desire, ancestor worship and transformation.

Ary ROSA and Glenda NICÁCIO studied film at the Federal University of the Recôncavo of Bahia (UFRB) and founded the independent production company Rosza Films in 2011.

Glenda NICÁCIO

They began producing short and experimental films, both fiction and documentary. Living in the Recôncavo, a Brazilian region, they prefer to develop films in which the process of production, narrative, and aesthetic are in tune with the rural surroundings. Coffee with Cinnamon (2017), their first full-length film, is the result of these experiences in local culture.
