Two short documentaries on prominent Caribbean Artists: Zo vrij als een vogel by Sharelly Emanuelson, a portrait of multi-faceted artist Geerdine Kuijpers, and Hollandse meesters in de 21ste eeuw: Tirzo Martha, by Tessa Boerman, a portrait of the socially engaged artist Tirzo Martha. Director Sharelly Emanuelson and artist Tirzo Martha will be present at the screening.

Documentary portrait of the multi-faceted artist Geerdine Kuijpers (82) and her life’s work: the Art & Nature Inn. Over 50 years she transformed an apartment complex in Curaçao into a unique, colorful, spiritual place. An ode to Kuijpers, her idiosyncratic paradise and the necessity of making art.

Portrait of Curaçaoan artist Tirzo Martha narrated in stagelike framed tableaux, positioning his work in the context of places and people of Curaçao. ‘Yu di Kòrsou’, Martha’s profound connection to Curaçao, is reflected in his use of materials, iconography, and history of the island and his art centre Instituto Buena Bista.

Sharelly EMANUELSON (1986, Curaçao) studeerde Audiovisual Media aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht en deed vervolgens een master Artistic Research aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. Sinds haar afstuderen maakt Emanuelson documentaires, installaties en korte films, meestal met onderwerpen gelinkt aan het leven op de Caraïben.

Tessa Boerman is een documentairemaker, programmeur en cultureel adviseur. Haar werk richt zich op thema’s als representatie, diversiteit en inclusiviteit. Voor IFFR programmeerde ze ‘Black Rebels’ (2017) over het verzet van zwarte filmmakers en kunstenaars tegen racisme en de aanhoudende culturele tweedeling. ‘PACT’ (2018), over de hedendaagse Afrikaanse (diaspora)cinema, met speciale aandacht voor de geschiedenis van het panafrikanisme, en ‘Soul in the Eye’ (2019) over acteur, filmmaker en activist Zózimo Bulbul’s nalatenschap en de hedendaagse opkomst van zwarte Braziliaanse cinema.
