There is more to Rastafari than reggae music and smoking weed. This anthropological research documentary shines unique, far-reaching light on the meaning and historical background of Rastafarians: free thinkers who shaped their spiritual life after slavery, influenced by the Black Power movement and Indian sadhus.

“You don’t interfere with nature!”, says a Rastafarian about his dreadlocks. He is not the only interviewee who is a fan of a spiritual life close to nature. In this documentary, various Jamaican Rastafarians and their female counterparts, musicians and cultural historians explain the meaning of ‘the locks’, the history of Rastafari that developed in Jamaica and is now a global phenomenon. And about British colonial Jamaica, slavery, the dispossessed population, the arrival of Indian laborers and the Black Power movement’s influence. A unique film about self-expression, music, prejudices and spirituality, filmed in a variety of countries from France and India to Jamaica and America. Never before was this specific history covered in such depth on film using interviews and unique archival material, and especially not from a female perspective on this generally male-dominated culture.

French filmmaker and anthropologist Linda AÏNOUCHE travels the world in search of new cultures and exceptional people. The ethnographer, who currently resides in New York, has published on a variety of socio-cultural issues. Dreadlocks Story (2014) was her first documentary, followed in 2015 by her short documentary A Paradise Stolen. Life in Pinnacle, Jamaica.
