Local & Regional History Program

No less than four documentaries feature in the Local & Regional History program this year, three of which are from Curacao filmmakers:

Drie vrouwen – Over slavernij en vrijheid *Caribbean premiere
Ida Does | Netherlands | 2018 | doc | Dutch | n.s.

The facades of listed buildings in The Hague and Amsterdam hide stories of slavery perpetrated by the Netherlands. In this documentary three women argue in favor of respectful recognition of this painful chapter in the country’s history. What does this past tell us about contemporary Dutch identity? And what does it mean for the descendants of the enslaved? Watch the trailer here.

Yamada (Calling)

In 1977 an unexpected musical marriage occurred between a local youth rock band and a church choir. 40 years later, this band (Grupo Serenada) is still dedicated to preserve traditional Papiamentu songs. This documentary reveals the personal and collective motives for committing to this cultural preservation.
