Masterclass Ernest Dickerson

Curaçao IFFR is honored to welcome special guest: cinematographer and director Ernest Dickerson.

A native of Newark, New Jersey, Ernest Dickerson earned his undergraduate degree from Howard University, after which he attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he met filmmaker Spike Lee. Dickerson’s first feature film as cinematographer was also Lee’s first film as director, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983), filmed while both of them were still students.
They would collaborate on such classic films as Brother From Another PlanetDo The Right ThingMo’ Better Blues, and Malcolm X.

Dickerson’s 1992 feature directorial debut Juice – which launched the film careers of Tupac Shakur and Omar Epps – gave way to other big screen credits, such as Surviving the GameBones, and Never Die Alone.
He has also directed several episodes of acclaimed television series such as The Wire, Dexter, and The Walking Dead and is the recipient of, among others, an Emmy and a Peabody Award, and two Image Awards.

In January 2016, Dickerson completed production on the feature film Double Play, based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Frank Martinus Arion, which was filmed entirely on location in Curaçao.

In this Masterclass, hosted by American film critic and Harvard University lecturer Elvis Mitchell, Dickerson will show a selection of clips from his extensive oeuvre and offer an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into the making of Double Play.
