Man on High Heels delivers all the shocks and ultraviolence we’ve come to expect from Korean crime thrillers, but with a truly subversive twist. Yoon (Cha Seungwon, maybe Jang Jin’s favorite star) is the ultimate hard man, a battle-scarred cop who gets his man by any means necessary. But Yoon has a secret: (s)he’s a woman trapped in a man’s body. The body in question – first seen naked in a sauna, as described by scummy gang boss Huh – seems as masculine as they come, but appearances can be deceptive.

Jang’s plot has two main strands: Yoon’s take-down of Boss Huh, whose criminal empire is minded by his brother while Huh is in jail, and the tribulations of female cop Jangmi who nurses a crush on Yoon as she works to trap a serial rapist.

JANG Jin (1971, Zuid-Korea) wordt gezien als een vooraanstaand figuur in de moderne Koreaanse cultuur. Na zijn theateropleiding aan de kunstacademie in Seoul werkte hij als muzikant, theatermaker en schrijver. In 2001 boekte hij succes als filmmaker met de donkere komedie Guns & Talks. Jang opereert op het snijvlak van humor en humanisme. Hij schetste met Good Morning President (2009) een fictief beeld van het leven van de Zuid-Koreaanse president. In Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) liet hij Amerikaanse, Noord- en Zuid-Koreaanse soldaten een wig drijven tussen de inwoners van een bergdorp tijdens de Koreaoorlog. Met deze dramatische komedie won hij in 2005 een Korean Film Award voor het scenario. Jang is ervan overtuigd dat satire politieke beslissingen kan beïnvloeden en verbeteren.
