Moko Jumbie (2018 Feature Film) Nominee

Marisol Gómez Mouakad | Puerto Rico, Mexico | 2016 | color | DCP | 90 min | Spanish, English | e.s.

Romantic drama about roots and tolerance by Trinidadian-American filmmaker Vashti Anderson. Whilst visiting her aunt in Trinidad, the young Englishwoman Asha meets her aunt’s mysterious neighbour Roger. This starts a romantic, magical search for identity and love. Intense debut film delicately navigates taboos, superstition, and spirituality.

English Asha visits her aunty in Trinidad hoping to find out more about her roots. Passion is ignited the minute she meets the boy from across the road, Roger. Most Trinidadians have African or Indian roots and the mix of cultures, folklore and mythologies doesn’t always play well together. The blossoming relationship between Indo-Caribbean Asha and Afro-Caribbean Roger is scrutinized by all.

Asha’s journey is portrayed by the various faces of the playful, irascible, and sometimes downright terrifying African figure of Moko Jumbie. Amid rising political tensions, this folkloric character loses its way. Anderson’s debut film had its global premiere at the 2017 Los Angeles film festival and was one of the ‘10 Festival Picks’. In her search for actors for Moko Jumbie, Anderson found her lead Jeremy Thomas in the catalogue of the Trinidad+Tobago Film Festival.
