New Zealand drama The Dark Horse opens 4th Curaçao IFFR

During the festival preview screening of the Argentinian film Wild Tales, the organization announced the Opening Film of the 4th edition of Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam.

This year, the organization selected the New-Zealand drama The Dark Horse to open the festival on Wednesday 25 March. Director James Napier Robertson (1982, New Zealand), also present during the festival, directed his first feature film I’m Not Harry Jenson in 2009. His second film, the drama The Dark Horse, like his debut has been received enthusiastically in his home country and recently won the IFFR Audience Award 2015.

This powerful drama tells the true and turbulent story of Genesis Potini, a New Zealander suffering from bipolar disorder who died in 2011. In a society in which it is difficult for a lot of young people to resist the temptation to stray from the straight and narrow, Potini tries to keep young people on track through chess. This involves overcoming the challenges of his condition and at times some pretty nasty criminals as well. A film that is often comical, at times raw, but above all intensely poignant.
