Scenes from filmmaker Diego Gutierrez’s parents’ marriage: after 50 years there seems to be nothing left and father and mother live separate lives at their stunning villa on the outskirts of Mexico City. Using his camera, their son tries to fathom how it all came to this.

It all seems so perfect: retired paediatrician Gonzalo and his wife Gina have been married for almost 50 years. The children have left the nest and done well. They have a comfortable life at their villa on the outskirts of Mexico City – the undulating lawn carefully maintained by the gardener, cook Lore serving café con leche.

However, in this film their son, filmmaker Diego Gutierrez, paints an entirely different picture. After 50 years of marriage, the spouses lead separate lives: father is writing his memoirs and wants to celebrate his 80th with a parachute jump, mother is depressed and feels imprisoned at the walled villa.

In silent tableaux vivants about life in and around the house and soul-searching, sometimes painful conversations, the son tries to understand his parents. Which choices did they make and are they happy with them? And what’s their future going to be like?

Diego GUTIERREZ (Mexico) is beeldend kunstenaar en filmmaker. Na zijn kunstopleiding aan het UNAM in Mexico-Stad doorliep hij de tweejarige residency aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam en nam hij deel aan het programma Doc Lab van het Binger Filmlab. Met Partes de una familia won hij in 2013 het Gouden Kalf voor Beste Lange Documentaire.
