Presos (Imprisoned) (2016 Feature Film)

Esteban Ramírez | Costa Rica | 2015 | 97 min | Spanish | e.s.

Feature film drama from Costa Rica about a young woman who comes to face unexpected, complex choices. Victoria’s new employer puts her in touch with a prisoner who intrigues her enormously. Her neatly ordered life soon comes unstuck.

Although her jealous boyfriend really opposes it, Victoria nevertheless starts working for a successful businessman. Her decision opens up new avenues to her: a career, a sympathetic boss and contact with his best friend who is in jail. When Victoria starts speaking to the latter on the telephone more regularly, she becomes curious. And so, for the first time in her life, she visits a penitentiary, in search of this mysterious young man. The moment marks a turning point in her life and has consequences for her love life and her choices from then on. Director Esteban Ramírez who is popular in Costa Rica was inspired by the documentary Los presos/The Inmates, a film his father made in 1975. In 2014, Presos/The Imprisoned’ crew filmed the prison scenes in a real prison just like Ramírez’s father once did. The prisoners and staff make very unobtrusive extras in among the professional actors in this drama.
