Good Friday (2016 Feature Film) Nominee

Harold De Vasten | Colombia | 2016 | 97 min | Spanish | e.s.

If you have a sick child and no funds for a cure, you can only hope for a miracle. While the Colombian spouse seeks help through secular, political channels, his devout wife hopes for help from above. Miraculous drama with wry elements about compassion, hope and an odd miracle.

On the morning of Good Friday in April 2020, Isabel and her husband Jesus, inhabitants of the Colombian village of El Santísimo, are also hoping for a miracle: their young daughter has been ill at home for ages. She is lovingly taken care of by her little brother while her parents try to get help from the members of their community for the expensive treatment. Isabel focuses on the Catholic Church and her religious work compiling Biblical ‘characters’ for the annual stations of the cross event. In turn, Jesus hopes to acquire money from local politicians. At the same time, their son opens the door and lets in a hungry, smelly stranger. Actor and filmmaker Harold De Vasten’s feature film debut that combines social-realist drama with wry moments and a lot of religious symbolism. His narrative reveals how an ordinary family’s struggle takes an unexpected turn due to the intervention of a strange vagabond.
